What happens if I am convicted of DUI?

First conviction
If you are convicted of your first DUI charge you can face jail time up to one year. You can also face a 90-day license suspension and a fine of $600 to $1,200. If you have any prior DUI convictions, you need to be even more concerned.

Second conviction
If this is your second DUI conviction within 5 years your license may be suspended for 1 year. The fine is increased to $1,100 to $5,100 and jail time is a minimum of 5 days (1 year maximum), or 30 days community service.

Third conviction
The fine is $2,100 to $10,100, license suspension is 3 years, and jail time is 60 days to 1 year.

Fourth conviction
License suspension increases to 5 years. Jail time is 1 to 10 years, and the fine is $4,100 to $10,100.

In addition to these penalties alcohol education (or DUI School) is generally required for any conviction. You will also have to request an SR-22 insurance form, which flags you as a high risk driver.
